Renal colic is pain that may occur when a stone gets stuck in part of your urinary tract. Other urinary tract disorders, such as infection, spasm, or stricture may also cause pain. Stones form when minerals or other substances build up, stick together and create crystals. These stones can be located in any part of your urinary system — your kidneys (kidney stones), bladder (bladder stones) or ureters (ureteral stones). Depending on the size and location of the stone, renal colic can range from mild to severe.
Kidney stones (also called renal calculi, nephrolithiasis or urolithiasis) are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside your kidneys. Diet, excess body weight, some medical conditions, and certain supplements and medications are among the many causes of kidney stones. Kidney stones can affect any part of your urinary tract — from your kidneys to your bladder. Often, stones form when the urine becomes concentrated, allowing minerals to crystallize and stick together.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) — also called prostate gland enlargement — is a common condition as men get older. Urethral stricture is a narrowing of the urethra. Your urethra is the tube that carries urine from the bladder through the penis and out the urethral meatus (the opening at the tip of the penis) during urination. Many men with a stricture will have increasing discomfort with urinating and a slowing of the urinary stream. This can develop gradually and lead to pushing or straining to get urine out. In others, the problem will show up suddenly and without prior difficulty, requiring immediate care.
